Studies have identified that medical practitioners have limited awareness of the needs of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender patients and that there is little coverage of this within medical curricula (Sequeira et al, 2012).This has been identified as a gap within the medical curriculum at our institution as well. We have a project running throughout 2015/16 to remix and reuse existing open educational resources (OER) in order to close this gap.Drawing upon Joanna Wild’s OER engagement ladder (2012) and the EVOL-OER project, this initiative can be situated in quadrant two of the framework as a repurposed OER in curriculum design.Additionally, this project is a case-study in student-led, collaborative content creation, using real-world digital skills to create content, the key aims are to:a) use existing OER learning and teaching resources, written for a US audience, undertake a literature review and rewrite and update for a UK-relevant context.b) work with local LBGT student and community groups to identify volunteers willing to share their healthcare experiences in the form of digital stories licensed for reuse and made available via the remixed OER package.We will also use the remixed learning resources in a face-to-face teaching sessions with current medical students in March 2016.This project will be a useful case study in:a) student-led curriculum and OER developmentb) reuse and remix of existing OERc) delivery of peer-led and facilitated teaching event using OER.d) student digital skills development.We anticipate that by OER16 in April 2016 we will report on the experience of this project so far, how it has gone, what we have learned and how we will take this initiative forward in future.
